Cabo Whale Watching Tours
Here it comes again! Whales are finally back in our waters! It is the season for Cabo whale-watching tours. Summer is over, and the holidays are close.
Los Cabos is ready to receive thousands of visitors and tourists coming to enjoy its beautiful sunny winter days, warm hospitality, and world-famous beaches. Here at Cabo Sailing, we give the best whale-watching experience. It is a true ‘Ocean Adventure’.
Whales in Cabo Lucas
Every winter, we are fortunate for another type of visitor, the Humpback and Gray Whale. Whales start their annual journey up north, leaving rich feeding areas looking for the safe, warm waters of Baja California Sur to give birth.
The whales that are spotted at Los Cabos usually travel in pairs, trios, and sometimes larger groups. However, it is not unusual to spot a whale traveling on its own.
Whales have a magnificent “surface behavior”. You will learn and hear about it from some knowledgeable crew members during your tour.
Breathing, spewing,….. and the most notable and awing of all is breaching. Very interesting and exciting moment when those happen.
Breaching happens when a Humpback whale springs out of the water partially or completely and then falls back with a huge splash.
A grown Humpback whale can reach up to 12 meters (40 feet) long and to a weight of 12 tons… these characteristics make for a very impressive splash!!!
Cabo whale watching tour practice and special permit
You can find numerous boats that will be more than happy to take you out at sea to see whales.
During the last few years, the Mexican authorities started to educate boat crews and provide specific permits. You can easily tell if a boat holds a whale-watching permit. That is by a specific flag it hoists.
Following the whales
When following whales, the bat must follow some basic but very important “rules of engagement”. That is in order not to disturb the natural swim path of the whales and allow far enough distance for normal and calm behavior.
Some boats are equipped with hydrophones. This submerged microphone gives us the opportunity to listen to the famous whales’ songs underwater.
Choosing the Right Whale-Watching Tour
The small-size boat experience
Smaller boats, like zodiacs and pangas, fast on flat seas with the advantage of covering larger areas to find wondering whales farther from the coastline.
On these little boats, you might suffer from a very uncomfortable ride on bumpy seas, you will be asked to stay seated on the same seat for the entire experience, and service is rather limited. There’s no shade and no bathroom on board, for example.
The luxury large boat experience
Sailing boats offer a unique option to see whales while using only their sails. It means no engine noise, a calmer experience for you, and less effect on the whales’ behavior.
At Cabo Sailing, we offer a sailing charter with complete service in addition to the whale-watching experience. Service includes, but is not limited to, an open bar, lunch, toilets, and, most importantly, comfortable seating.
Luxury yachts hold the best experience combining speed to cover large areas and onboard service to enjoy a day of adventure on the water.
Combined Cabo whale watching tours
Those tours are very popular among tourists. Allowing you to enjoy a complete Cabo San Lucas day adventure.
